Most famous of the Confederate ironclads, Virginia
was converted from the partly burned hull of the
U.S. frigate “Merrimack” at Norfolk, Va. in 1861/62.

Armament 2 x 6.4” Brooke RML,
6 x 9” S.B., 2 x 12 pdr Howitzers.
On 9.3.1862 she fought the U.S.S. Monitor,
but was burnt by the Confederates when Norfolk
was abandoned on 11.5.1862.
