101 TON COASTAL MERCHANTMAN
Small merchantman widely used in coastal trade.
Many were taken up for use by the Royal Navy in
time of war, but only one, H.M.S. Experiment of
1792 was actually built for the navy. The armamen t
varied but Experiment carried 10 x 12 pdr
carronades and 12 swivels. Other luggers taken
up included Dart (ex French Le Dart), General Concleux
(ex French Le General Concleux), Violet,Alarm and Diligent.
