Description - 3MR7 GALLIOTT (x 3)
Small low freeboard galley much favoured by the Barbary corsairs. Very light, hence fast and manoeuvrable, with two rowers per oar, they varied in size between 16 and 24 oars per side. The commonest size would have 18 pairs of oars, giving a total of 72 oarsmen. Armament would normally be only one gun forward of between 16 and 24 lbs, and a few swivel guns on the sides. Approximately 60 soldiers would be carried. Over 50 Galliots appeared in the Turkish fleet at Lepanto.
