Description - 3MR3 LARGE GALLEY – BASTARDA Large Galleys were more often seen in the Ottoman fleets than the Christian fleets although both sides made use of them, sometimes as squadron flagships, “Padronas”, in place of Lanternas. With 28 banks of oars and up to 220 oarsmen they were more cumbersome than ordinary galleys, and thus usually carried two sails. Armament would normally be five cannon made up of one 36-40 pdr, two 12 pdr guns and two 6lb sakers. Swivel guns would also be carried on the sides. In addition, up to 200 soldiers would be carried.
