Description - SWEDISH NAVY OF WORLD WAR 2 After the end of the first world war, the Swedish Navy though efficient was largely obsolete. Apart from the three Sverige class coast defence ships, the Fylgia , Clas Fleming and her most recent, though very light destroyers the remainder of the fleet was largely worn out. From 1924 on, she proceeded to build up a force of destroyers commencing with the 10 ships of the Ehrenskold group and then followed by the slightly improved Visby class. In 1940 she purchased from the Italians two old Sella class destroyers, renamed Psilander and Puke, which were totally unsuitable for her needs and two of the more recent Spica class, renamed Romulus and Remus which were much liked. Four improved Spica's were built, the Mode class. Finally, two much larger and more modern destroyers of the Oland class were built, taking into account many of the lessons of the war, in particular the need for a powerful anti aircraft battery. The Swedish economy was unable to compete with the great powers in the matter of capital ships, but restricted itself to modernising the three Sverige class ships. Although some of the earlier Coast Defence ships were modernised, and lasted well after the war, none could be regarded as a front line vessel, with the exception of Dristigheten was converted to a seaplane tender in 1939. Of the cruisers both Clas Fleming and Fylgia were modernised between the wars, Clas Fleming first having only two funnels, but she was soon modified as the model with three. In 1933 the Gotland was launched as a hybrid aircraft carrier/cruiser carrying 12 float planes. In this guise she served mostly as a training ship but early in WW2 was taken in hand for conversion to an AA cruiser, as the model. Finally, the Swedish Navy lay down two much larger cruisers, of the Tre Kroner class. These ships were up to date in that the main armament was suitable for AA use the 6" guns having an elevation of 70 degrees. Both were rebuilt in the early 50's and Gota Lejon still serves in the 1990's in the Chilean Navy.
