Description - BA404 FAIREY ALBACORE The Albacore, a three seater torpedo bomber was designed as a replacement for the Swordfish and first flew in 1938. It entered production in 1939, and the first squadron was formed early in 1940. With the advantage of enclosed cockpits and greater power the Albacore should have replace the Swordfish, but they continued to operate side by side. They were widely used by the Fleet Air Arm, and in 1941 damaged the Vittorio Veneto at the Battle off Cape Matapan. By the end of 1943 some 800 had been built, but by 1944 all had been replaced by Barracuda or Avengers. Maximum Speed 161 mph, Armament – one forward firing 0.303 machine gun in starboard wing and two 0.303” Vickers in the rear cockpit. Bomb load – one 1,610lb torpedo or 4 500lb bombs
