Description - BA401 FAIREY SWORDFISH First flown in 1934, the Swordfish entered service in 1936 and production continued until 1944 by which time 2,391 had been built. The standard Fleet Air Arm torpedo aircraft early in the war, 12 squadrons were at sea in 1939. 21 Swordfish carried out the attack on the Italian Fleet at Taranto. Later in the war it used for mine laying and convoy protection and with rockets for anti-submarine warfare. The last front line squadron was disbanded May 1945. Maximum Speed 138 mph, Armament – one 0303” Vickers machine gun firing forward, plus one 7.62mm Lewis gun in observers position. Weapon Loads – One 18”Torpedo or one 1,500 lb mine or 1,500 lb of bombs/depth charges, or 8 rockets.
